An Grianán Aileach
An Grianán Aileach, the iconic stone fort atop Greenan Mountain in County Donegal, holds a deep historical and symbolic connection to the McLaughlin Clann. Built around the 6th or 7th century, it served as the royal seat of the Northern Uí Néill, the powerful dynasty from which the McLaughlins descend. The McLaughlins (Mac Lochlainn) are a branch of the Cenél nEógain, tracing their lineage to Niall of the Nine Hostages, one of Ireland’s most celebrated High Kings. From the 11th to the 12th centuries, the Mac Lochlainn chieftains rose to become High Kings of Ireland, ruling from their stronghold at Aileach. The fort was more than a defensive structure - it was a ceremonial centre of kingship, where alliances were forged, laws proclaimed, and the sovereignty of the clan reinforced. |
In 1101, the rival O’Briens of Munster destroyed the fort’s stone walls as a symbolic blow to the power of the northern kings, but its legacy endured. Today, An Grianán Aileach stands as a potent emblem of McLaughlin heritage, representing their ancient seat of power, their political influence across Ireland, and their enduring connection to the land and history of Inishowen. It remains a place of pride and pilgrimage for the clan.
Information on accommodation suggestions, transport links etc will also be provided in the coming weeks. Plan ahead and plan EARLY!

However, we have attempted to create events which can be enjoyed by as many as are willing to make the special journey to Ireland. There will also be more opportunities to socialise outwith the main itinerary events this time around so look out for these fringe events closer to the time. *The ticket numbers for the Reunion are strictly limited and so we would advise you to purchase them as soon as possible (particularly if you have a larger family group) - once the limit has been reached, there will be no additional availability unfortunately. |
