Background Story
I am a professional genealogist, historian and Irish National Tour Guide based in Co. Donegal, Ireland. My career background was in accountancy originally, but since I was a child, I was always so very interested in the history and heritage of both Ireland and Scotland. Having a parent from both places, I have always been particularly drawn to the family history from each country. I have studied genealogy since the age of 10 - the old-fashioned way at my own Grandmother's table - absorbing traditions of family passed down through the generations from ancient times. From my teenage years I regularly visited repositories throughout Ireland and Scotland, creating my own detailed databases of information, long before such information was available online. Since then I have formalised that training and continue to upskill regularly, particularly in the newest field of genealogy - DNA analysis. Around 20 years ago, I went from studying company finances to applying my skills and attention to detail to formal and professional genealogical research. I then trained to be a tour guide as part of the organic growth of my new business. It has been a huge success and of personal satisfaction to me as I find it thoroughly fulfilling and no day feels like "work" any more! Today, I conduct family history research by commission, host bespoke tours for those interested in visiting Ireland / Scotland and provide one-to-one and group genealogy courses and talks.
