Ross Errilly
Franciscan Friary,
Co. Galway

Ross Errilly Franciscan Friary, founded in the mid-fourteenth century by Sir William de Burgo, is one of Ireland’s finest surviving medieval monastic sites and among the best-preserved Franciscan friaries in the country.

Over the following century, the complex expanded to include a tower completed in 1498, with its church, bell tower, cloisters, domestic quarters, refectory, bakehouse, kitchen and even a water tank for keeping live fish.

The friary’s fortunes changed dramatically in 1538 when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries and confiscated the property. Further devastation came on 10 August 1656 when Cromwell’s soldiers desecrated the site, searching tombs for valuables.

Following the Glorious Revolution and the introduction of the Popery Act in 1698, the Franciscans were forced to abandon the friary. Although they briefly returned in 1715, it was eventually deserted and fell into ruin. Despite this, Ross Errilly remained a place of burial well into the twentieth century.
