Every Family Has A Story. Let’s Discover Yours.

Ireland’s Diaspora has carried family stories and traditions across the world, often keeping a strong attachment to the places earlier generations left behind. Researching that ancestry offers a way to explore those roots and learn more about the people whose lives brought your family to where it is today.

You may have an old family photograph, a name passed down through the generations or a place you have never quite managed to find. These are often the things that prompt us to look more closely at our family history and wonder what else there might be to discover.

We at Irish Ancestral Group offer professional research into Irish, Scottish and Ulster-Scots ancestry, helping you follow the evidence and understand more about the people behind the records.

Ulster-Scots Genealogy

Family connections between Ulster and Scotland can take research across the Irish Sea more than once. We consider those movements in the context of your own family, examining the available records to investigate relationships and places of origin, rather than assuming a shared surname establishes a connection.

Townlands, parishes and communities

Irish Genealogy Research

Irish family history is closely connected to the places where people lived, and identifying the right townland or parish can make a considerable difference to the direction of a search. Our lead genealogist, Jennifer, brings more than 30 years of research experience and a longstanding connection to Inishowen, County Donegal, to this work.

We combine documentary research with local knowledge to explore family connections and the communities your ancestors belonged to. Alongside establishing names and dates, we look for information that can help you understand where the family lived, how they earned their living and how their circumstances changed over time.

Family connections across the Irish Sea

Scottish And Ulster-Scots Connections

For many families, research leads back and forth between Ireland and Scotland as generations moved for work, married and established homes in different communities. Scottish and Ulster-Scots research can help you explore these connections, following the available evidence through the places where your family lived.

Our interest in these links is informed by Jennifer’s own family background as well as her professional research. If your story crosses the Irish Sea, we can discuss what you already know and consider how records from both countries may help you take the research further.

When you would like to visit

From Research To A Journey Home

Finding an ancestral place can leave you wanting to see it for yourself, and research can provide a useful foundation for a heritage tour. Where the evidence and access allow, we can plan visits around the townlands, churches, burial grounds and communities associated with your family, helping you connect the written history with the landscape.

You are welcome to commission research on its own, or to speak to us about including your family connections in a future visit to Ireland or Scotland. There is also room to bring in the wider interests of your travelling companions, so that the tour is enjoyable for everyone in the group.
